Blessing the Ill and the Aged
"By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the People of God by freely uniting themselves to the Passion and death of Christ" (Catechism of the Catholic Church,1499).
Last Rites & Anointing of the Sick
The last rites are anointing of the sick, communion, and reconciliation. Those who are in danger of death, suffering from a chronic or severe illness, or preparing for serious surgery are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. The sacrament can be repeated whenever a person falls into a serious sickness or a more serious crisis develops during the same sickness.
